The mayor of Gazipur has announced the opening of some mosques in his area amid a government ban on worshipers praying in all mosques across the country to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Jahangir Alam said that since BGMEA has opened garment factories, mosques also need to be opened.

"As the mosque is the house of God and we all fast during the month of Ramadan, from next Friday, people in mosques that do not have coronavirus will be able to offer prayers and perform Tarabi prayers."

He announced the decision in a video posted on the Gazipur City Corporation's website.

Gazipur is one of the areas in Bangladesh where the highest number of people are infected with coronavirus.

Mr.  Alam said mosques would be opened in wards where no one was found infected with the coronavirus.  But everyone has to take care that no one from outside can come to those areas. ”

In order to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the government banned worshipers from going to the mosque at the beginning of Emas and praying in congregation.

However, the Imam and a few others have been allowed to offer prayers there.  During Ramadan, 12 people were allowed to offer Tarabi prayers in congregation.
